For more than 30 years, Bedford Humane Society has saved the lives of vulnerable animals by providing rescue, fostering, adoption, and essential care. In April, we took a bold step forward with the groundbreaking of our new Adoption Center.
As the Adoption Center building takes shape, we have launched a Capital Campaign to raise the funds needed to open its doors and ensure that it will be on solid financial footing to serve the Bedford County, Virginia, community for years to come. This purpose-built facility will not only support the pets in our care — it will also support the people who love them. Unlike a traditional shelter, the Adoption Center will:
- Offer safe spaces for meet-and-greets and adoptions
- Provide a training area to support foster families and the public
- Allow for cat testing and better animal pairing
- Host adoption events, fostering connections in our community

The journey so far..
Preparing for our new adoption center was no easy task. Our team of volunteers worked tirelessly to obtain detailed blueprints to bring our vision to life, securing building permits to ensure compliance with local regulations, and signing contracts with trusted partners to kick off construction. Each phase requires careful coordination and dedication. Thanks to the efforts of our incredible volunteers, we are making steady progress to construct the building that will soon serve the animals of our community!
Where we are today
We have broken ground and construction is officially underway! The site has been excavated, and plumbing has been installed underneath the slab. The slab has been poured for the foundation, and now walls are going up! Check back for updates as we make progress!
